Fallen Giant Traditional Cache

Fallen giant is an old felled swamp gum  located on the beautiful and  easy walk into Russell Falls.

An easy 20 minute return walk.

Cache is an eclipse mint tin with log only

Located in a high muggle area, stealth may be required

This huge fallen  swamp gum began life as a tiny seedling smaller than the head of a pin. In rain dampened soil the seed began to germinate, soon one pair of little leaves appeared, then another. In time the tiny seedling grew into a small tree, which provided food  and home for insects, birds and other animaks/wildlife 

In 1965 at an age of about 250 years, this tree was cut down because it was at risk of falling across the track. Now large forest snails, springtails and a host of different fungi are breaking it down, providing nutrients for the next generation of Forrest Giants 

After 120 years, this swamp gum would have been taller than Hobarts Wrest Point Casino. 

Swamp gums are the tallest flowering plants in the world.
