Cruising On The Canal
The canals were the super highways of the day and a much smoother ride than the bumpy land travel. But cruising the canal was not comparable to today's river cruises. A 50 foot boat would be crowded with as many as 25 passengers in its tiny quarters; sharing this space with crew, cargo and a stable. Wash facility was a tin basin chained to the deck to scoop out dirty canal water and use with a common bar of soap and towel. Sleeping births folded out of the walls and for privacy the men's and ladies' areas were separated by a thin curtain. During the day and in fair weather, passengers could escape to the deck; but at night or in foul weather they went below. Here they stewed in the heat and the mixed aromas of body odor, alcohol, tobacco and stable smells. All these luxuries while zooming along at 4 miles per hour maxium speed.
