Geocache Description:

A visit to Blackheath is not complete until you veiw the magnificant Grose Valley from the Anvil Rock Lookout and the unusual rock formation known as the Wind Eroded Cave.

To get out to the Wind Eroded Cave, follow the mostly gravel Hat Hill Road from Blackheath. You will eventually come to a fork in the road sign posted to Anvil Rock on your left and Perrys Lookdown on your right - veer left to Anvil Rock.

At the end of the road is a small car parking area and is well sign posted to both attractions here. Follow the track for the short walk to the Wind Eroded Cave. While you are here it is definately worth while having a look from the Anvil Rock Lookout.

The cave is a natural formation resulting predominately from wind erosion.  Weathering, erosion, and deposition are a main forces behind landscape types. When rocks are exposed to the hydrosphere (water) and atmosphere (air), the weathering process begins as this changes both the physical and chemical characteristics of the rocks. When rocks start to weather they are ready to be eroded and over time abrasion of the surface by the wind slowly etches away the softer weathered material.

Earthcache requirements:

In order to log this earthcache you must answer the following questions. You do not have to wait for a reply before logging your find. I attempt to reply to all e-mails submitting answers and, if there are any problems I will contact you to obtain more information.

  1. Describe the location where you are standing. Include in your description the approximate size of the cave, texture and colours of the sandstone.
  2. There are several distinct layers of quartz pebbles that can be seen in the sandstone. What is the colour and approximate size of these pebbles.

The answers to these questions should not be included in your log, nor should your log include spoiler photos. Please send the answers to me via e-mail. You may choose to use the new message centre if you wish.

Optional (but not required): please take a photograph of your GPS at the Earthcache and post this in your log. This is not required, but would be appreciated.
