Houtan Garden is adjacent to Huangpu River on the north, extends to Shibo Avenue on the South, borders the Expo Garden on the east and stretches to Nijiabang on the west. With a planed area of 13.98 hectares, the urban Garden integrating wetland protection, science education and other functions was completed in 2010. Aimed at protecting, recovering and re-constructing the wetland ecosystem, Houtan Garden takes the self-cleaning capability of wetland into full play to purify and regulate the water and to provide more oxygen. As a result, a natural wetland is restored featuring bio-diversity.
There are 3 entrances in the Garden, and walking is the major means of sightseeing. Along the upstream route there are such scenic spots as the area of terraces and paddy fields, the "Hanging Garden" transformed from and old factory, "Ludi Platform" to view the Huangpu River, the dock as the water entrance and buildings for service purpose, and riverside platform to view water purifying system. Dazzling sceneries show up in succession and add beauty to each other.
You can drive or take a taxi on Shibo Avenue to the gate / trailhead waypoint, and there is pay parking not too far away from there. Or, you can take the Metro to Houtan Station, exit 4, and walk 1 km to the gate / trailhead waypoint. In the park, look for little children and parents doing their biology science projects with nets and buckets, and you may see the occasional wedding party taking photos as well.
