Geocache Description:

A second Canadian-inspired hide, a country where cachers need to use ingenuity to enable the game to be played in winter, when several feet of snow cover the ground for up to half the year.

Follow the yellow arrows of the Pohaturoa track that can be accessed from Long Mile Road in the North or the Waipa Mountain Bike Carpark in the South.

Nearly three years ago I hid GC45RMF - Winter Cache (Rotorua), which was intended to be the first in a series. It took me a while, but I finally took the time to continue this theme. You are looking for a camoed 1lt screw-top container hidden slightly off-trail to keep you out of sight of passing muggles.

The Pohaturoa track should take about 3 hours to walk, and will lead you through many different types of plantation forests from gums to firs and redwoods. Some areas have recently been harvested and others are due to be milled soon. The trail takes you past the Pohutu Geyser lookout before reaching the Pohaturoa trig. There is a detour to a view of the Waipa Mill, and further down the trail there is a detour to a lone bubbling mud pool, before entering the heart of the mountain bike park. There are now several geocaches along the trail for you to find, including my Winter Caches. See the bookmark list on this cache page for all other caches you can find on this walk.

Please be discreet when looking and retrieving the cache. Try not to damage the environment to minimise the creation of a geo-trail. This is a very busy forest and I would like my hides to remain hidden from the muggles.
