What is a Leap Year?

A year which has an additional day added in order to keep the calendar year synchronized (or alighned) with the astronomical or seasonal year. A leap year is also known as an intercalary year or a bissextile year.

How do you work out if it is a Leap Year?

if (year is not exactly divisible by 4) then (it is a common year)
else if (year is not exactly divisible by 100) then (it is a leap year)
else if (year is not exactly divisible by 400) then (it is a common year)
else (it is a leap year)

Did you know?

The name "leap year" comes from the fact that while a fixed date in the Gregorian calendar normally advances one day of the week from one year to the next, the day of the week in a leap year will advance two days (from March onwards) due to the extra day added at the end of February (thus "leaping over" one of the days in the week).
