Why the tree is so unique This Carob tree, is not very tall nor does it have a great projection or large dimensions; however the tree characterizes its self due to the piercing of its thick trunk with clear symptoms of senescence, and the many roots that emerge on the surface of a highly eroded soil. The scarcity of trees in the area and the longevity of this tree, are also reasons for it to be considered unique. Ceratonia siliqua is a species protected by the Municipal Bylaws on Planning, Use and Protection of Green Areas, Parks, Heritage Gardens and Plant Defense in Mijas that was published in April 2009 . The tree is in the rural area of “El Hornillo”, on a hillside near the road that runs between Las Lagunas and the area of “La Alqueria” near the AP -7. A few meters away, there is another “unique” tree, “El Hornillo” Pine .
