Geocache Description:

This large tin building you see off behind the trees is what remains of an old cotton gin.

Not quite enough room for a pen, so please BYOP. Contains some small trade items.

This could certainly be part of my Learn About Kurten series, which I started some years ago. Just now getting around to placing this one.

According to what information I've been able to find, this gin belonged originally to Henry Kurten (founder of the community of Kurten), who owned it in partnership with his daughter Johnnie Kurten Koppe. It changed hands, going first to Paul Holubec and Louis Opersteny, then to Adolph Opersteny, who closed it in 1947.

(This information was gleaned from the thesis: “A Time for Planting: A Social History of Selected Rural Communities in Brazos County, Texas” by J.J. Schultz, 1973)

The title I got from a rather depressing 1970 country song sung by Roy Clark. You can read about it

Congrats to TxRider for the FTF!
