Geocache Description:

Top of fence has barbed wire so watch out.

This trail goes behind a working mental hospital, so please be courteous while in the area.  At GZ you will find rubble.  Some of the concrete still has rebar and there are stray cats in the area, so be very careful.  This one isn't recommended for children.

This trail is only available during daylight hours.

Congrats to sfcChaz on being FTF!

History

Spring Grove is the second oldest continuously operating psychiatric hospital in the United States.  Originally founded in Baltimore in 1797, the hospital was used to care for patients with Yellow Fever.  In 1840 the hospital began treating mentally ill patients exclusively.  The hospital moved to Catonsville in 1872.  In 1963, the post-Civil War era buildings were demolished and replaced with the more modern structures you see today. The hospital is reknowned for its research into treatments for schizophrenia.
