History
Dr. Richard Sprigg Steuart was the Superintendent of the Maryland Hospital for the Insane. Unhappy with the inadequate bed capacity at the original site, he pushed for the creation of a larger facility in Catonsville. He even donated $1,000 of his own money to the cause. Construction of the new facility was put on hold due to the Civil War. Steuart believed that slavery was wrong, but he did not share the views of the abolishonists. Steuart was relieved of his duties at the hospital after refusing to sign an oath of loyalty to the Union. After the war ended, Steuart was reinstated as hospital superintendent and was in charge of the move to the new Catonsville location.
