A Black Nano Cache
This is a car park we use often and I have always wondered as to the history of the hidden churchyard at the back. I was inspired to research it recently and decided it was exactly the hidden gem worthy of a cache to bring others to appreciate the history.
This cache is on the site of the former Ebenezer Chapel, a Particular Baptist Chapel from 1800 to 1834 when it moved to the site of the present Baptist Chapel in Garland Street. Only the Burial Ground remains.
In 1929 some 44 members of the Lower Baxter Street Chapel were given leave to start up their own at Glemsford. The new chapel in Glemsford was also named Ebenezer Chapel. It survived until 1986 but is now a grade II listed 5 bedroom home with courtyard while the Bury St Edmunds one became a car park!
You can enter through the gate (which is not locked) and take in the history, please be respectful of your surroundings. Sadly not many of the stones can be read anymore but I still found it fascinating to see. In the centre of the small courtyard is a huge tree, please take care as the tree roots make the paving slabs very uneven. Why there are paving slabs at all still remains a mystery to me!
Although not one of the worst places in Bury, a spot of CITO is always appreciated here.
