Now the history as to the location name

Once Upon A Time...

Long, long ago (about 1880) a prospector and geologist named Mr. Ritchie from the small village of Linton in Scotland traveled to Brazil to seek his fortune. Unfortunately, he did not have much success there. When, a few years later, his sister decided to settle in South Africa it did not take much to persuade Ritchie to join her!

Ritchie realized there was great opportunity to prospect in South Africa so set about prospecting for gold. Finally, he managed to find a seam of gold right here on the farm they had settled on. The decided to call the farm and mine “Linton” after the little village they came from.

The mine produced very low grade gold but he persevered with the mining process. He put down a shaft which followed the seam right through the hill.

With all the enthusiasm, energy and exitement of mining in those difficult days, the soil was dug out by hand and brought to the surface with ropes and wicker baskets on a metal pully.

From there, the soil was crushed so the gold could be panned using a dish and water. It was a long process and hard work!

Finally, they were rewarded with a small bottle of gold. Mr Ritchie’s sisiter (a very wirey and energetic woman) would then make her way to Durban on horseback and sell the gold.

A Very Dangerous Idea (but a funny story!)

One day, Mr. Ritchie had a brilliant idea! He decided to try his luck with dynamite in the shaft. He planned to lay a long fuse wire, then light the fuse and quickly run to the basket to be winched up, as quickly as possible, by his workers to the surface before it exploded…

Well, his workers knew very well how much danger he was in. They winched so hard and so fast the rope tangled and left poor Mr. Ritchie at the bottom of the shaft with the dynamite about to explode!

Lucky for Mr. Ritchie, the fuse went out before it reached the dynamite and he lived to tell all about it.
