A wise man (might have) once said:
It’s not the gadgets that make the man, but the man who makes the gadgets.
BOND, JAMES BOND
Let’s look back at some of the outrageous gadgets of Agent 007, James Bond
that wowed the public upon first sight and have since become commonplace.
#2 From Russia with Love 1963
PAGER
Bond had a pager to notify him if he ever needed to contact MI6.
The pager is a one-way method of communication (from MI6 to the operative)
and bleeps when the user is needed. JAMES BOND would then call in via his car phone.
1974: the first successful consumer pager was introduced. It had no display and could not store messages. It was portable and notified the wearer that a message had been sent.
1980: pagers had a limited range and were used mostly in on-site situations like hospitals.
1994: there were over 61 million pagers in use.
Lektor Decoder
A decoding machine, used by soviet Intelligence to de-compile coded and highly sensitive documents. It was the same size as a typewriter; the unit was in a brown leather case. Inside it contained small buttons; a coded data strip was inserted into a slot, and out of another slot came the decoded message on a strip of paper.
#3 Goldfinger 1964
Tracking Beacon
Bond was given two homing beacons from Q-branch. One was installed into Bond’s Aston Martin DB5. It transmitted information directly to his in-car map to track the villain, Auric Goldfinger. It resembles todays Satellite Navigation in today’s cars. The second was smaller and allowed MI6 to know where Bond was.
# 7 Diamonds Are Forever 1971
Fingerprint Scanner
Tiffany Case and her unique biometric scanner were fooled by Bond's fake fingerprint. These days the technology is so smart and widespread that there might be a small fingerprint scanner in your notebook computer-and it's probably way too sophisticated to be fooled by a lifeless prosthesis.
#10 The spy who loved me 1977
Wetbike – Personal watercraft
A wetbike is a planning water motor cycle that is a cross between a motorcycle and a jet ski.
Lotus Esprit
This James Bond car that could turn into a submarine with the push of a button. It was equipped with anti-aircraft missiles.
# 14 A View To A Kill 1985
Polarizing Sunglasses
Allows the ability of seeing clearly through tinted glass. Bond uses them to see through Zorin’s tinted office window.
We now have polarized lenses and integrated headphones, 128 MB music player and a built-in bounty hunter.
# 19 The World is Not Enough 1999
Multi-tasking Heads-up display on BMW Z8.
Mini Augmented Vision glasses are equipped with Wi-Fi, GPS and project a stereoscopic HUD onto your field of view.
# 21 Casino Royale 2006
Touchscreen
At MI6 headquarters, Bond’s employers use a Profile Touchscreen Device in order to gather information about possible suspects.
Today touch screens are everywhere.
