Wellingtons Old Fever Hospital

Also known as the Chest hospital, this old building sits on Mount Victoria overlooking Newtown and is listed as a category 2 heritage building in the New Zealand Historic Places Trust register. It was built in 1918 to treat and isolate patients with tuberculosis and other infectious diseases. The entire building was planned carefully, utilizing the wind flow through the corridors to help clear out disease.

It was also used to treat the returning World War 1 soldiers of which over 750 were killed by the strain of influenza.

The hospital was decommissioned in 1981, remaining vacant until Wellington Polytecnic Conservatory of Music used it for rehearsals between 1987 and 1998. Some say the old building is haunted with the ghosts of patients and nurses who have never left. One popular story is of Sister Slippers; a nurse who still roams the building in her slippers during the night.

In 2004 the Wellington SPCA submitted a proposal to use the building which was approved by the Council and given resource consent in 2007. The project was suspended between 2009 - 2011 because of concerns over the amount of work needing to be done and it wasn't until December of 2013 that the SPCA was able to move into the building.
