Salamander Springs with over 100 acres of oak/hickory woods, ponds, wetlands and fields was purchased by Dundee Township in 1997. You will find plenty of wildlife including birds, small mammals and of course salamanders.
Trails are open from dawn to dusk. There are several ponds on the property. The northern half of the site is without trails and is not readily accessible to the public at this time. Long term plans include restoring native vegetation, surveying and marking boundaries and developing more trails. A monitoring program for amphibians and reptiles is in progress.
The site steward along with the Dundee Township continue to clear out non-native vegetation restoring the hydrology and opening up the savannas. Buckthorn and other invasive trees were cleared from open prairies and native grass and for seeds were sown. This cache is placed among the 100 year oaks and cottonwoods recently clearing providing air, light and moisture. There are thorns in this area from invasive multiflora roses. Trail is slippery after rain or in icy conditions.
Cache placed with permission of Dundee Township Supervisor.
