This unique area along Chestnut Creek was once a growing lil town and community known as Blair at the turn of the 20th century. Blair spurted when the Northern and Western Railroad came establishing a freight station in its midst. The line continued upstream to another small town, Bonneparte, renamed Galax in 1906 for its export of the beautiful Galax leaves which were in high demand for floral decorations. The first train pulled into Blair on 1 December 1901.
With the Railroad reaching Galax along with businesses and industries expanding, the little town of Blair began to fade as its business owners relocated to Galax. After which the area became known as Cliffiview in 1916. Yet the Freight Station remained open serving the area for many years to come. The last train pass.ed through on 15 October 1985 enroute from Galax to Pulaski marking the end of an era and the Northern and Western Railroad line in this section of the New River Valley region.
The "Clffview Station" is one of the remaining buildings from the old Railroad, now being ustilized as a Visitor Center and Ranger Station for the New River Trail State Park.
