Groundhogs are watched awakening from winter hibernation, coming out of their burrows. Tradition goes if it's overcast & groundhog doesn't see his shadow, he'll stay out and we'll have an early spring. If he sees his shadow, he returns to his burrow & winter lasts for six more weeks. 'Tis an ancient belief that hibernating creatures were able to predict the arrival of springtime by their emergence.
