die kleinste Stadt Österreichs, liegt im tiefen, gewundenen Tal der Thaya. Inmitten ausgedehnter Wälder, auf hohem Felsrücken, ragt über der Stadt die mächtige Ritterburg mit vier Türmen empor. Die schöne Gegend, die gute Luft und die ruhige Lage bieten dem Besucher Möglichkeiten zur Erholung, die er sonst selten findet.
Urkundlich 1290 erstmals als Stadt erwähnt, entstand der Ort als typische Burgsiedlung im 11. und 12. Jahrhundert, woraus sich auch der Name (althochdeutsches Wort „hard“ = Wald, „-egg“ = Fels, Stein) ableitet. Im übertragenen Sinn ein „Festes Haus mit Wald“.
Die Stadt liegt inmitten des Nationalparks Thayatal. Dieser garantiert gemeinsam mit dem tschechischen Národní park Podyjí den Schutz einer der schönsten, romantischsten und artenreichsten Tallandschaften. Kaum anderswo gibt es auf engstem Raum eine vergleichbare Vielfalt an Pflanzen und Tieren, wie hier an der Thaya. Die Natur hat absoluten Vorrang
Der Christbaumsteig
Diese Strecke ist ein Teil des Hardegger Rundwanderweges und beginnt in der Nähe des alten Badeplatzes. Die Wanderung führt zum Maxplateau und von dort kann man einen Abstecher zum sagenumwobenen Reginafelsen machen. Der Ausblick hier ist einzigartig, denn Stadt und Burg Hardegg liegen dem Besucher gleichsam zu Füßen. Gehzeit: 1 Std./3,5 km
Dieser Weg wird nicht nur als Wanderweg benutzt, sondern ist bei eventuellem Bruch der Staumauer in Frain, der schnellste Weg aus der Stadt.
Bei Überflutung würde nur noch ein Teil der Burg aus dem Wasser schauen.
Zurück zur Stadt geht es über eine leicht begehbare Forststraße, die direkt vom Maxplateau abzweigt. Beim Alten Badeplatz treffen die beiden Wege wieder zusammen und führen in die Stadt zurück.

Linz: A 7 Richtung Freistadt - B 310 bis Freistadt - B 38 über Zwettl bis Rastenfeld – hier links abbiegen Richtung Horn – B 45 bis Sigmunsherberg – L 1155 bis Weitensfeld – L 1065 bis Waschbach – L 1044 bis zur Kreuzung mit der L 38 (links abbiegen) und auf der L 38 bis Hardegg.

nejmenší město v Rakousku, se nachází v hlubokém klikatém údolí řeky Dyje. Uprostřed rozlehlých lesů, na vysokém skalnatém hřebeni, se nad městem tyčí mohutný rytířský hrad se čtyřmi věžemi. Krásná oblast, dobrý vzduch a klidná poloha nabízejí návštěvníkům možnosti odpočinku, které jinak jen zřídka najde. Město bylo poprvé zmíněno jako město v roce 1290 a v 11. a 12. století vzniklo jako typická hradní osada, a odtud pochází i jeho název. (Staroněmecké slovo „hard“ = les, „-egg“ = kámen, kámen).
