Peterpender community is located 5 miles east and 4 miles north of Charleston, and it's major settlement came after the Civil War. There was at one time 2 stores, a cotton gin, a blacksmith shop and a barber shop located here, which made it a main farm and trade center in the late 1800's and early 1900's. Families from surrounding villages such as SubRosa, Mt. Hope, Lowes Creek, Elm Vale, and Grand Prairie often traded there on Saturday and at seed and ginning time. The nearby cemetery at Lowe's Creek is where the majority of Peterpender's residents rest. All of this is interesting, but why is the world is it named Peterpender?
About 1890, the U.S. Government was setting up new Post Offices and this area qualified. Jerome Pendergrass's store was the likely location, and the only thing needed was an official name for the community. Mr. Pendergrass sent in the name Lone Oak, but it was rejected because it was already taken. A new and different name was needed. Mr. Pendergrass spoke with several people at his store that day including Peter Burton, Walter Pile, Ocie Brant, Frank Pendergrass and at least one of the Milam boys.
To be sure the next name would not be rejected, the group came up with some very outlandish suggestions and tales to back them up. Doctor Hudson of Grand Prairie rode up on his hourse during the discussion which was taking place out under the lone oak tree. Hudson, a scholarly fellow, suggested they name the place Peter Pindar after the famous storyteller of that name in honor of all the tall tales that were told under that very oak tree. It's rumored that Hudson was the only person who had heard of the famous storyteller, but they all agreed there probably wouldn't be anouther place named Peterpender.
