The school was originally established in 1961 as a branch school of Simpo Juniori High School, which is located at 700m northwest from here. At its official opening ceremony in 1962, the school had only first-year students of 786, while the number had got 1,399 in total two years later. During 1970's, the number of students are around 1,000, but it decreased to approximately 400 after 1990's.
The school's site used to be a part of Chikusa Works of Nagoya Armory's Factory until the end of World War II. Bombing of Nagoya in 1945 was so severe that many residential areas as well as Chikusa Works were almost heavily destroyed.
The post-war reconstruction plan made the former factory site into a "peace and refreshment" area. The hackberry tree on the schoolyard was transplanted from the anti-fire belt of trees in former Chikusa Works.

若水中学校は、名古屋市立の中学校です。
昭和36年に振甫中学校の分校として発足し、昭和37年に開校式（入学式）が執りおこなわれました。当時、振甫中学校から第１学年17学級（786名）が移り、開校しました。新入生が毎年入学してきて、全学年がそろったのは開校から３年目の昭和39年でした。昭和39年の学級数は27学級、生徒数1,399名でした。昭和50年代は生徒数がほぼ1,000名前後でしたが、平成になってから減少し、平成15年度では生徒数419名、学級数12学級になりました。
現在では１学年100人足らずのこんな小さな都会の中学校ですが、よい指導者に恵まれ、女子バスケットボール部が好成績を挙げていました。平成22年度及び23年度には「全国中学校バスケットボール大会」で二連覇を果たしています。
本校は戦前の名古屋陸軍造兵厰千種製作所の工場跡に立てられています。昭和20年の名古屋空襲でこのあたりは激しい爆撃で破壊されたと言われます。
戦後の復興計画で、学校・病院・公園の集まる「平和と憩い」の地域になりました。校庭にある榎の木は、当時の千種製作所の正門あたりに植えられていた防火林の中の１本を植えかえたものです。
