Geocache Description:

A brother or sister to our 'White Cart flood prevention scheme - Blackhouse' cache. Little more than a cache 'n' dash. Please bring a pen or other implement. Published to coincide with the 'Cuppa in the Wind' event.

The construction work, carried out here, is part of the White Cart water flood prevention scheme. Apparently the White Cart has caused serious flooding in the South Side of Glasgow for nearly 100 years. The idea of the flood prevention scheme is that a water storage site here will contain flooding on the White Cart. As well as creating a storage reservoir (capable of holding millions of gallons of water) engineers have installed devices called "hydro brakes". They are conical shaped and the water will flow through them normally until it reaches a pre-determined height when the velocity will cause a vortex to form. The pressure of air within the vortex will "throttle" the flow of water, slowing it down and allowing the reservoir to fill up. Water will then be released into the White Cart in a controlled manner. Apparently the hydro brakes used in the White Cart scheme were the largest in the world, at least at the time..
