Geocache Description:

There are eight caches in the RI Series which will take you around Raymond Island.

Raymond Island is 243km east of Melbourne on the Princes Highway and 18km south east of Bairnsdale. Access to the island is 200 metres from Paynesville by car ferry. Presently it costs $14 for a return trip by car or free for pedestrians and cyclists. Raymond Island is approximately 6km long and 2km wide. Raymond Island was named in honour of William Odell Raymond a magistrate from NSW who became a Gippsland squatter.

The park at the ferry has BBQ’s, picnic tables a children’s playground and public toilets. There are no shops on the island so bring your own supplies.

So much wildlife can be seen on Raymond Island including koala’s, kangaroos and wallabies, echidnas, wombats and an abundance of native birds. Sometimes you see dolphins playing in the surrounding waters. Raymond Island is one of the best places to see Koalas close up. At night you can see a number of nocturnal animals brush tail and ring tail possums, bats and birds of prey.

The Island has a great display of trees from flowering wattles, banksias, tea trees, Southern Mahogany, Coastal Manna Gum with native grasses and braken fern. All of these attract insects and birds.

You do not have to leave the track to find this cache.

BYO Pen. Please return the cache as you found it.
