Benjamin H. Lloyd served as a Private in Company D of the 43rd Alabama Regiment. The 43rd was known first as Gracie’s Brigade. Brigadier General Gracie was severely wounded at Bean’s Station. Colonel Moody assumed command of the brigade, and the unit was then known as Moody’s Brigade. Gracie returned to service as the brigade was placed in the trenches fighting in the defense of Petersburg, Virginia. On December 2, 1864, while observing Union army movements, Gracie was struck and killed by an artillery shell.
Benjamin Lloyd served through the war, returned home and died shortly after.
