Wade Mayfield enlisted and served as a Private in Company A of the 41st Alabama Infantry. Buried near Private Mayfield in this cemetery are several other soldiers that served beside him; Marion Cabiness, Alfred Lloyd, Wiley McGee, James Reece, James Shirley, Gaston Sullivan, James White, John Mayfield, and William Banks. The recruiting effort put forth for the enlistment of soldiers from the community of Echola to serve in this particular regiment was strong, and then to have this many men return home from the war simply phenomenal. What goes unnoticed in this cemetery is the number of young men from the Echola community that also enlisted, but did not make it home.
Private Wade Mayfield enlisted in the 41st Infantry Regiment, while his brother, Lieutenant Robert Jasper Robin Mayfield (seems unfair that one brother had 3 names while the other had four names) enlisted in the 43rd Infantry Regiment. At the same battle, on the same day, both regiments were engaged, and both brothers were captured and taken prisoner; both were held at the Point Lookout Civil War Prison in Maryland. Both Mayfields were paroled and made it home to Echola.
