John Murphy Springer enlisted as a Private in Tarrant’s Battery of the Alabama Light Artillery. The battery saw action at many major engagements during the war, including Perryville, Chickamauga, Nashville and then Spanish Fort. The battery surrendered at Citronelle at the end of the war.
The remarkable thing about the Springer family is what took place during the Civil War. John Murphy was one of six sons of Dennis Springer and Susan Griffin. Together Dennis and Susan raised the six boys, (no girls born from this marriage), and all enlisted to fight in the war. Rufus Springer was a Private with Company B of the 8th Alabama Cavalry; Jafus Springer was a Private with Company D of the 43rd Alabama Infantry Regiment; Jabez Springer was a Private with Company D of the 43rd Alabama Infantry Regiment; Nathaniel Springer was a Private with Company D of the 43rd Alabama Infantry Regiment; Norwood Springer was a Private with Company D of the 43rd Alabama Infantry Regiment, and our Veteran here was a Private in Tarrant’s Battery. Of the six sons enlisted, only three survived the war, as Jafus, Jabez and Nathaniel died early in the war.
