A little less than a year has passed since the start of the Harlingen Geo-Quest so we have added a few more caches starting December 21st. We also have moved some of the containers that have been subject to Muggle tampering. If you are new to the Quest make sure to check our website http://www.myharlingen.us/page/parksandrec.geocachinghome and if you are coming back, thank you and feel free to earn a second coin by finding the new and transplanted caches.
Lon C. Hill park was established in 1927, but did not always go by that name. Originally Fair Park, and for a while Fiesta Park, Lon C. Hill park was the location of the Mid-Winter Valley Fair. The fair was a major all Valley event that focused on agriculture and existed from 1921 through the 1950s. Permanent structures were erected for this yearly event; everything from barns to amusement rides. The name of the park was officially changed to Lon C. Hill Park during the 23rd Annual Mid-Winter Valley Fair, where all four of Lon C.'s daughters were in attendance.
In the 1960s the park included amenities like tennis courts, a mini golf course, kiddie rides and a small zoo. The Boys Center, which was run by the Optimist Club, also resided on park land. This later became the Boys and Girls Club.
Today the grounds have grown to 73 acres which includes two playgrounds, three covered picnic shelters, a Humming Bird and butterfly garden (which resides where Lon C. Hill first built his home), and the Lon C. Hill Aquatic Center and Splash Pad. It still is the location of a number of yearly events like Kid Fit and Blues on the Hill.
All that being said you can imagine that stealth will be a necessity when looking for this cache. Parking is nearby in the Boys and Girls Club lot or across the street from the pool. A short walk will get you to the GZ and then . . . enjoy the search.
