The Katberg pass was built in 1854 and was the last one built by Andrew Geddes Bain. He never managed to complete it. This task was left to Adam de Smidt.
The pass summits at 1622m ASL. The cache is hidden lower down at 1400m.
The average gradient is 1:5 with some part as steep as 1:3. The pass is a rough gravel road but would could be managed in a vehicle with good clearance. A 4x4 is recommended in rainy/wet and snowy conditions.
