Holochess is generally considered the galaxy’s second most popular game. There are a few variations, including Dejarik, a brutal gladiatorial contest of chance and positioning. R2D2 and Chewbacca famously played holochess aboard the Millennium Falcon, during which Artoo was advised by C3PO to ‘let the wookiee win’.
One of the shortest recorded games of Dejarik occurred in Mos Espa, on Tatooine. The game was between Watto, a Toydarian junk dealer, human trafficker and incorrigible gambler, and Nien Nunb, a Sullustan smuggler.
It was a cagey opening. Nien Nunb’s first move was to defend with a Monnok.
Also being cautious, Watto defended with his Ng’ok.
Nien Nunb moved his Houjix forward.
Watto, after considering for a long time, chose to make no move.
On his next turn, Nien Nunb moved his Monnok
Watto, having passed last time, moved two pieces, the Strider and the Ghhhk.
Nien Nunb’s eyes lit up, as Watto had walked into his trap and he attacked with the K’lor’slug
Watto, realising that his position was hopeless and he had lost a large wager, put his head in his hands and resigned the game.
