Geocache Description:

A quick roadside cache

PERLY GATES

Unlike the Pearly Gates refered to in Biblical terms, these gates lead to a little path I would not reccommend you walk on your own.  This section of road has become well travelled by Perlemoen (abelone) poachers.

Illegal harvesting of abalone (specifically Haliotis midae) in South Africa have deriven the species to near extintion.  In 2007 abalone was placed on the CITES endangered species list , requiring government to monitor its trade.  This restriction was however removed in 2010, but permits are still required for international trade.

A number of mariculture undertakings are producing abalone for export, but also seed abalone, to recolonise reefs.

Abalone is not only under threat by poachers but also by the acidyfication of the ocean, which results in the dissoloving of their calcium carbonate shells.  It is predicted that abalone will go extint within the next 200yrs.
