WELCOME TO THE WALLACE FAMILY CEMETERY


 

George and Elizabeth

Married on February 24, 1835

They lived at their family plantation home, Glencoe, built in 1841.

Glencoe was located on the Dismal Swamp Canal in southern Norfolk County.

This area was generally called Wallaceton.

 

George Thomas Wallace

Born near Great Bridge, Norfolk County

April 4, 1812 – July 25, 1889

George began to buy property in the 1840’s on the east side of the canal about halfway down its length at its intersection with the North West Canal. 

By 1855, his holdings in the area amounted to almost 14,000 acres. 

 

The 1860 Census listed George as a timber-getter

and the individual with the highest net worth in St. Brides Parish.

 

George and his son John entered into partnership, under the name Wallace and Son, in the lumber and milling business along the Dismal Swamp Canal, and in eastern North Carolina.  A sawmill was constructed on the west bank of the Dismal Swamp Canal, and they milled the abundant juniper, pin, poplar, and cedar into shingles, rails, ties and telegraph poles.  They also built a store building on the east side of the canal, which also functioned as a company store for the lumbermen.

Cortland Female Seminary at Troy, New York. 

She had a lifelong passion for literature and music.

She taught many and is a published author.
