Despite the name, the cache isn't necessarily golf-themed. There is
a bag of golf tees as part of the original contents, however. It's
my third cache hidden, a three part multi, difficulty three and
terrain three, and the name gives a clue as to where to start.
This multi-cache is a result of the fun had by those attending the
Central
Coast geocaching picnic. This is a very large undeveloped park
in the Santa Barbara area. Kid, dog, and horse friendly. On
weekends when the winds are right you will often see hang-glider
pilots landing here from the mountains above. Mountain bikes are
permitted in some areas but not all, not recommended for this
cache. Despite easy access by car, the area is usually deserted and
you'll likely have it mostly to yourself and perhaps a horseback
rider or dog walker. Quite a variety of vegetation, birds, etc.
The terrain rating of three is primarily due to the length of the
hike. It isn't very steep and there are several spots to rest and
enjoy a snack along the way. You won't need to go off-trail except
for the last few feet to get to the cache itself.
I know there have been some objections to math on caches, but
such is often the nature of a multi-cache. I'll try to keep it easy
and fun. The coordinates given above on the website for the cache
will take you to a sign with three sets of numbers like this:
NNN-NNN-NNNN.
On a piece of paper, write the letters
A B C - D E F - G H I J.
Write the numbers from the sign directly below them such that
the first number is under the A, etc. Then substitute the numbers
for the letters in the following set of coordinates which will take
you to the second leg:
34 degrees, JH.A33 minutes North
119 degrees, 4B.GGG minutes West
Go to that location.
At the second location you will be able to see (but not touch) a
set of numbers of the form "NN-N" painted vertically on a metal
object. Using the same concept, enter the numbers:
X Y - Z
With these and the numbers from the previous sign, go to the
following location which is the actual cache:
34 degrees, JE.ADX minutes North
119 degrees, 4I.XIX minutes West
