Il Monastero benedettino di Santa Maria Del Mare risale agli anni ’50, quando il Vescovo della Diocesi della Spezia, Mons. Giuseppe Stella, a seguito delle richieste di Suor Itala Mela, chiese a uno dei monasteri benedettini di Bergamo di inviare un gruppo di monache per una nuova fondazione. Il 13 novembre 1966 si ha la solenne apertura del piccolo Monastero presso l'oratorio costruito presso l’antica Pieve di Marinasco. Il 22 marzo 1967 si aggiungono altre monache al piccolo gruppo delle fondatrici, tra cui Md. M. Beatrice Amadei ne diventa la priora. Questo piccolo gruppo di monache da un nuovo inizio alla "vita benedettina" alla Spezia. I primi anni presentarono molte difficoltà, perché inizialmente le monache non furono pienamente accettate dalla popolazione che temeva di perdere l’antichissima Pieve di Marinasco e anche perché il Monastero non era in una situazione economica stabile e favorevole. La comunità, coraggiosa e perseverante, nel 1976 ricevette dalla Santa Sede l’approvazione delle prime Costituzioni, presentate dalla Md. Beatrice Amadei, e il Monastero nello stesso anno veniva eretto ad Abbazia. Sempre nel 1976, il 14 settembre, la Md. Beatrice riceveva la benedizione abbaziale. Ma con il passare degli anni lo spazio divenne insufficiente, incapace di ospitare le molteplici attività del gruppo di monache. Il Signore aprì inaspettatamente le porte della Provvidenza e rese possibile la costruzione di un monastero sul colle di Castellazzo, a pochi chilometri di distanza, dove la comunità si è stabilita nel giugno del 2000.
Il Monastero regala una delle migliori visuali su Spezia ed il Golfo dei Poeti. E’ possibile soggiornarvi. Dalla stazione e dal centro città si può prendere l’autobus nr. 13, diretto a Sarbia e Montalbano. Si scende alle scuole elementari di Strà e poi si percorrono circa 200 metri a piedi.

Santa Maria Del Mare (Saint Mary of the Sea) is a Benedictine Monastery founded in 1950s, when the Bishop of La Spezia, Mons Giuseppe Stella, following the requests of the Nun Itala Mela, asked to a monastic community in Bergamo to send a small group of nuns for the foundation of a new monastery. On 13th November 1966 there was the great opening of the small Monastery by the oratory built closed to the ancient Marinasco Pieve. On 22nd March 1967 other nuns join the initial small founding groups, amongst those there is Mother Beatrice Amadei that become the first Abess. This new small group of nuns gave new start of the Benedictine life in La Spezia. The first years were difficult, as the group of nuns was not completely accepted by the local population as they were afraid to lose access to their beloved ancient Pieve and because the Monastery was in an unstable financial condition. The religious community, perseverant, received the final approval from the Vatican for the construction and the founding of an Abbey. Since then the activities and its community grew and the construction of a bigger monastery on the hill of Castellazzo, nearby, where the monastic community moved in in June 2000.
At the Monastery site you can enjoy one of the most breathtaking view over La Spezia andd its Poet’s Gulf. To get there from the railway station and city center you can take bus nr 13, direction Sarbia and Montalbano and get off at primary school in Strà then walk about 200mt.
