Geocache Description:

This cache was placed on the site to highlight the history of the High School and nearby Church

The nearby St Francis Xavier Catholic High School was built in 1959 as the first Catholic High School in Jasper Place.  The first school expansion was opened in March 1964. The expansion added a business and science wing. The second expansion in 1969 added a new gym, a shop and some upstairs classrooms. A third expansion in 1996 renovated the cafeteria, art room and office and added a fitness center.

The school is named after St. Francis Xavier likely because the first principal, Fr. MacNeil omi, was an alma mater of the FX University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia.  Fr. MacNeil was a member of the Catholic Religious Order the Missionary Oblates. He was the principal from 1958 – 1970. The High School still celebrates FX Day on  Saint Francis Xavier feast day in December.

The school Motto is “Caritas Christi” or Charity of Christ. The school colors are blue and white.  In 1966 the students held a plebiscite and the Ram was chosen as the school mascot and is now the name of all the schools sports teams.

The Annunciation Church was originally going to be named after St Francis Xavier but the name was changed just before it was completed and opened. The large house house on the South West corner of the intersection was originally a residence for Catholic priests who worked at the school and at the Church.
