Geocache Description:

The James Rowe House originally sat at the south west corner of Victoria and Charles Streets until 1999.  This was the home of James Rowe, Whitby’s first Mayor in 1855.

James Rowe was a grain merchant at Port Whitby for more than 20 years as well as an officer of the Port Whitby/Lake Scugog, Simcoe & Huron Road Company.

Rowe House was also the childhood home of his son, Elliott S. Rowe (1859 – 1914) Vancouver’s first public relations director from 1907 to 1914.

The James Rowe House was moved to this corner of Front and Charles Streets in 1999.
