Douglas (Landplane) 1 Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Southerntrekker: Hi There

As the owner has not responded to either my log or my colleague's previous log requesting that they check this cache I am archiving it.

Please note that once the cache has been archived, this can not be undone. This is explained in the Help Center - http://support.groundspeak.com//index.php?pg=kb.page&id=70

You will need to create a new listing, put it back in for review and as long as it meets today's guidelines and no other caches have been published in the area causing a proximity problem, then it will be published.

Regards

Geocache Description:

A quick "cache 'n' dash" placed near a plaque marking the Island's first landplane airfield.

On 29th July 1919, a pilot of the Avro Transport Company began to offer pleasure flights to paying customers, using the beach opposite the Castle Mona Hotel for taking off/landing. Before this, the only aircraft to operate from the island had been balloons, military airships, seaplanes and the occasional demonstration flight.

The following year saw pleasure flights continue to operate from the beach with the aircraft being parked/serviced on the grassy areas on Queen's Prom before being wheeled down to the beach for take off/landing!! However, complaints from local hoteliers (who objected to the noise and the fact they wanted to used the grassed area for drying their sheets!!) saw the practice ended and the airfield wasn't used again.

Description

The plaque at GZ is one of several unveiled in Oct 2015 by the Airfields of Britain Conservation Trust (ABCT) to mark the Island's former airfield sites.

Please note: The area can get very busy so some stealth is required. However the cache should be easy to spot/retrieve and the hint is very precise!! Happy hunting!!
