Shiding used to be a thriving town during the Qing Dynasty(1636–1912) due to its geographically favorable condition as a resting place on the way to Yilan and its coal mine resources and tea trading. 

石碇位在台北盆地東南緣境內多山，早期以煤礦為主要經濟來源。
