Is one of the most mysterious Kyiv structures that was built on the initiative by the tsarist government in the First (I) half of the XIX century at the highest point of the city - on the Klovskaya hill, as the object of New Pechersk fortress. Tower #5 (BC «Bashnya №5») was part of a complex of fortifications of Kyiv and defended the northern slope of Pechersk hill. Together with the Tower №6, arsenal workshops and barracks gendarmerie regiment it created land front from the Klovskyi ravine side. The construction began in 1833 and continued the record time - 13 years. Originally the tower was intended for the saving of supplies (it should accommodate a year's supply for military parts of the whole district of Kyiv). But despite of peaceful nature, it was armed with dozens of guns and 168 rifles, as well as a large garrison. Tower has gathered up with other facilities of huge Pechersk fortress with a help of shafts and defensive brick walls. According to these and other indicators Pechersk fortress had no analogues in Europe and was a real stronghold of Kyiv people. However, during the whole its history the mighty fortress never fired due to loss of value Kyiv strategic defense points. In 1897 the tower was divided warehouses and garrison prison, loopholes were laid, instead of which appeared window slits.

Одно из самых загадочных киевских сооружений было построено по инициативе царского правительства в I половине ХIХ столетия на самой высокой точке города Кловской горе, как объект Новой Печерской крепости. Башня №5 входила в комплекс оборонительных сооружений Киева и защищала северный склон Печерской возвышенности. Совместно с башней №6, арсенальными мастерскими и казармами жандармского полка она создавала крепостной фронт со стороны Кловского яра. Ее строительство началось еще в 1833 году и длилось рекордное время 13 лет. Изначально башня предназначалась для хранения провианта (вмещала годовой запас для военных частей целого Киевского округа). Но, несмотря на мирный характер, на вооружении у нее было несколько десятков пушек и 168 ружей, а также большой гарнизон. Башня объединялась с другими сооружениями громадной Печерской крепости с помощью валов и оборонительных кирпичных стен. По этим и другим показателям Печерская крепость не имела аналогов в Европе и была настоящей твердыней киевлян. Однако за всю свою историю мощнейшая крепость ни разу не выстрелила из-за потери Киевом значения стратегического оборонного пункта. В 1897 году башню делили складские помещения и гарнизонная тюрьма, бойницы были заложены, а вместо них появились оконные прорези.
