Geocache Description:

Dobie Gray was born Lawrence Darrow Brown in 1940 and passed away in 2011, he was an american singer songwriter.  His career spanned 23 albums between 1963 and 2005 as well as the genres of  country, pop, soul and musical theater.  He had hit records that includes the 1965 hit "The 'In' Crowd" and "Drift Away", which was on of the biggest hits of 1973.


The song Drift was written by Mentor Williams and originally recorded by John Henry Kurtz in 1972 for the alubm Reunion.  A year later in 1973 Dobie Gray released the song on his album Drift Away. This version became Dobie Gray's biggest hit, peeaking at number 5 on the billboard hot 100, 7 on the Canadian RPM and 42 on billoards Hot Soul Singles chart.

Many other performers have covered the song including Roy Orbison, Ike and Tina Turner, Mud, Rod Stewart, Ray Charles, The Rolling Stones and Ringo Starr.  Recently Uncle Kracker had a major hit in 2003 with Gray performing the final verse of the song for the single.
