Most modern calendar years have 365 days, but a complete revolution around the Sun (one solar year) takes approximately 365 days and 6 hours. An extra 24 hours thus accumulates every four years, requiring that an extra calendar day be added to align the calendar with the sun's apparent position. Without the added day, the seasons would move back in the calendar, leading to confusion about when to undertake activities dependent on weather, ecology, or hours of daylight. February 29 came to be regarded as The Leap Day when the Roman system of numbering days was replaced by sequential numbering in the late Middle Ages. This date occurs in most years that are divisible by 4, such as 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020 and 2024.
The Leap Day is very important for geocachers who are trying to fill in all the calendar with finds. Traditionaly Geocaching HQ is celebrating leap day with a souvenir — actually, with two! The first souvenir can only be earned on Leap Day itself — February 29 — by attending a geocaching event. The other souvenir can be earned all weekend long (February 27-29) by getting outside and finding a geocache.
This geocaching event will take place in one of the famous locations of Vilnius - Gediminas castle. It is the site with a great panoramic view of Vilnius oldtown. If the weather allows, attendees will enjoy the wonderful sunset. Event is very friendly to tourists. And it's actually the first geocaching event on this popular hill.
Event will start at 5:30 pm. and will last not less than 30 min. Geocachers are welcome to bring travelbugs, cameras, hot drinks, snacks and good mood. On offer, event will be extended and displaced to any pub nearby.
