Newtownhamilton or simply Newtown to locals is a small town in South Armagh. Before the Plantation of Ulster it was known as Tullyvallen and was renamed by Alexander Hamilton in 1773 and was once an important stop off between Armagh and Dundalk. The town has suffered in past decades from the rise of other towns in the area like Markethill, Castleblaney and Bessbrook as well as cities like Newry and Armagh becoming little more than a group of houses and small shops. This series will highlight a few local areas of history and interest. Newtownhamilton Primary and Secondary schools were opened together in the mid 1950's and have stood at the same site, side by side, ever since. The Secondary ( now known as the High School ) is closest with the a clear road right through to the Primary at the far end. Many different principals, teachers and pupils have crossed the doors here over the years and currently Mrs Adamson and Mr Megaw are the principals of the Primary and High School respectively. I was a pupil at the Primary School myself from 1981 to 1989. As Newtownhamilton has slowly expanded over the last few decades, the housing estate which you see on your left with your back to the road is one of the latest estates to be built. It was built on land once owned by a Mick Mooney who had a few small farm buildings on the site and was one of the last of his generation with larger farms becoming the norm in the area. This cache will require you to climb over the gate into a field owned by us and take a few short steps. If you should encounter cattle in the field they will unlikely cause you any problems but remember you do enter at your own risk. There will be no cattle though until the spring time.
