A rua Gonçalo de Carvalho está situada no bairro Independência, cidade de Porto Alegre, capital do estado brasileiro do Rio Grande do Sul. Ladeada de árvores do género tipuana, tornou-se conhecida internacionalmente após uma campanha pela sua preservação, que se espalhou pela Internet e levou a via a ser apelidada de "a rua mais bonita do mundo" e a ser considerada "património ambiental" pela Prefeitura.
O nome da rua não homenageia o missionário português Gonçalo de Carvalho, como alguns acreditam. O nome é uma homenagem ao comerciante gaúcho Gonçalo de Carvalho.
 Gonçalo H. de Carvalho nasceu em 1853, em Cachoeira, Rio Grande do Sul, onde foi educado. Esteve no Rio de Janeiro durante quatro anos, voltou em 1868 ao Rio Grande do Sul, e foi durante sete anos empregado numa casa comercial. Estabeleceu-se por conta própria em 1875 no ramo de miudezas de toda a sorte, que importava de Inglaterra, França, Alemanha, Suíça e outros países da Europa e da América do Norte.
As mais de cem árvores do género tipuana, enfileiradas em cerca de 500 metros de calçadas, teriam sido plantadas no final da década de 1930 por trabalhadores de origem alemã empregados numa antiga e famosa cervejaria local.
Em 2005, o projeto de um grande edifício garagem no centro comercial da região trouxe a ameaça de mudanças na rua, com a saída de todos os veículos pela estreita rua e abrindo a possibilidade de asfaltamento da via (calçada com pedras de granito) e o futuro alargamento da rua com retirada de parte das árvores, o que levou os moradores e amigos das árvores a mobilizarem-se pela preservação do belo Túnel Verde. A campanha deu certo com muitos apoios conseguidos através da Internet, e a 5 de junho de 2006, o então prefeito José Fogaça assinou um decreto tornando a rua Gonçalo de Carvalho "património histórico, cultural e ambiental da cidade". Foi a primeira via de Porto Alegre a receber tal distinção, concedida numa cerimónia realizada durante a abertura da 22.ª Semana Municipal do Meio Ambiente.
 No dia 29 de janeiro de 2016, abateu-se sobre a cidade de Porto Alegre uma tempestade tremenda, com os ventos a atingirem os 120 km/h. Tal como um pouco por toda a cidade, a rua Gonçalo de Carvalho foi duramente afetada, tendo caído algumas árvores e havido inúmeros ramos quebrados. Porém, o túnel urbano formado pelos edifícios protegeu bastante as árvores, tendo evitado males maiores.

The Gonçalo de Carvalho street is located in the Independência neighborhood, city of Porto Alegre, the Brazilian state capital of Rio Grande do Sul. Flanked by trees of the genus tipuana, it became internationally known after a campaign for its preservation, which spread over the Internet and led the way to be dubbed "the most beautiful street in the world" and to be considered "environmental heritage" by the City Hall.
The name of the street does not honor the Portuguese missionary Gonçalo de Carvalho, as some believe. The name is a tribute to the gaucho trader Gonçalo de Carvalho.
Gonçalo H. de Carvalho was born in 1853, in Cachoeira, Rio Grande do Sul, where he was educated. He lived in Rio de Janeiro for four years, returned in 1868 to Rio Grande do Sul and was employed for seven years in a home business. Set up his own business in 1875, and exported good to England, France, Germany, Switzerland and other countries of Europe and North America.
The more than one hundred tipuana trees, aligned over 500 meters of sidewalks have been planted in the late 1930s by workers of German origin employed in an old and famous local brewery.
In 2005, the project of a large garage building in the sopping center of the region brought the threat of changes in the street, with the output of all vehicles through the narrow street and opening the possibility of asphalting it (paved with granite stones) and future enlargement of the street with removal of the trees, which led the residents and friends of the trees to mobilize for the preservation of the beautiful Green Tunnel. The campaign worked with many support obtained through the Internet, and in June 5th, 2006, the then Mayor José Fogaça signed a decree making the Gonçalo de Carvalho street "historical, cultural and environmental heritage of the city." It was the first street of Porto Alegre to receive this distinction, awarded in a ceremony held during the opening of the 22nd Municipal Week of the Environment.
On January 29, 2016, fell upon the city of Porto Alegre a tremendous storm, with winds reaching 120 km/h. As almost everywhere in the city, the Gonçalo de Carvalho street was hit hard. Some trees feel and numerous branches were broken. However, the urban tunnel formed by the buildings protected enough trees, and avoided greater problems.
