Geocache Description:

A cache at the chapel Agios Stefanos near Matala

This cache leads you through the typical landscape around Matala to a small chapel named Agios Stefanos. You can walk to the cache area from Matala, from the given parking WP or from the WP "Agios Stefanos sign". If you have a 4x4 car, it is also possible to drive to the cache area. I would not recommend this for a normal car as the dirt road is getting worse and quite steep in some parts after the sign.

Matala is located 68 km southwest of Heraklion, on the boundaries of the plain Messara and Asteroussia Mountains. It is one of the most popular tourist destinations of Crete and certainly the most famous beach of Heraklion. It is famous for the carved caves in the rocks and the hippies of the ‘70s. It is located close to Phaestos, the second largest palace of the Minoan civilization. Matala was the port of Phaestos, and on the Roman Times, it became a port of Gortys.

Dont miss a stroll through Matala!

The cache is a small plastic container. It contains the logbook, a pencil and some items to trade.
