2016 marks yet another leap year, a 366 day year that occurs every four years. But what is the point of a leap year?

It takes the Earth roughly 365 days and six hours, or 365.25 days, to orbit the Sun. In order to keep our modern calendar in line with the Earth's orbit a leap year occurs every four years, guaranteeing that each four year cycle takes the same amount of time as four revolutions of the Sun.

The idea was thought up by Julius Caesar's astronomers to ensure festivals happened at the same time each year. The system was then developed in the 16th century by Pope Gregory XIII who declared that a leap year would occur in years divisible by four.
