Pour la création de la nouvelle ville (actuel quartier Notre Dame), destinée à mettre en valeur son château, Louis XIV impose des règles de construction strictes : hauteur limitée à un étage et une mansarde, murs en briques (ou fausses briques en plâtre peint), pierre blanche et toits en ardoises.
Si tout à été reconstruit depuis, il subsiste encore une habitation témoignant de ce style architectural : la Maison des Fontainiers ou Pavillon des Sources bâti en 1683 et qui alimentait les fontaines du quartier en eau potable.
