La chiesa, il cui titolo completo è Insigne Chiesa Arcipretale dei Santi Fermo e Rustico Martiri, è la sede della parrocchia della città di Caravaggio, nonché uno degli edifici più antichi del borgo; in stile gotico lombardo, fu edificata nella sua forma attuale nel XIII secolo, probabilmente su un edificio sacro preesistente.
Secondo la leggenda, nel 306 i due santi Fermo e Rustico transitarono per la città e resuscitarono un morto. L'elemento leggendario si scontra però con la mancanza di rilievi archeologici che permettano di accertare l'esistenza di insediamenti stabili nel territorio comunale in un'epoca tanto remota.
All'interno, la Chiesa di San Fermo e Rustico presenta tantissime cappelle da visitare di interesse turistico e religioso: la Cappella del Santissimo Sacramento (la più grande e importante), di San Rocco e San Sebastiano, di Sant'Antonio di Padova, della Beata Vergine del Rosario, di San Bernardino, dell'Apparizione.

The church full title is Eminent Archpriest's Church of Saints Fermo and Rustico Martyrs. It is the seat of the Caravaggio town parish, and of the oldest buildings of the village; its style is Lombard Gothic; it was built in its present form in the thirteenth century, probably over an existing church building. According to a popular legend, in 306 the two Saints Fermo and Rustico passed through the city and resurrected a dead man. The legendary element, however, is not supported by archaeological surveys that would allow us to ensure the existence of permanent settlements in the municipal area so remote in time.
Inside the church we can find many chapels of touristic and religious interest: the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament (the largest and most important , St. Rocco and St. Sebastian, St. Anthony of Padua, the Blessed Virgin of the Rosary, San Bernardino chapel, Apparition chapel.
