Geocache Description:

The Frankfort and Cincinnati Railroad (F & C) operated a 40 mile shortline roadroad between Frankfort and Paris, Kentucky and had connections on both ends by the Louisville & Nashville (L & N) Railroad. Although incorporated in 1871 as the Paris, Georgetown and Frankfort Railroad, construction did not begin until 1888. The name of the railroad had been changed to the Kentucky Midland by then and the line was completed in 1890. As with many railroads built during this time in Kentucky, convict labor was used for the bulk of the work.

Due to the many distilleries along the route, the railroad was nicknamed ‘The Whiskey Route’. Another nickname was ‘Forty Miles and Forty Bridges’ due to the numerous water crossings between the two towns. Coal and corn was received for the distilleries and box cars were used for shipment of the whiskey in barrels from the distilleries.

Prohibition virtually forced the railroad to stop operations and the increased use of cars and trucks to transport people and goods finally caused the railroad to abandon the Paris-Georgetown line in 1967. It was abandoned from Georgetown to Elsinore in April 1970. In 1985 a derailment that damaged a trestle near Frankfort sealed the fate of the line. It was then decided to abandon it, since the F & C could not afford to rebuild the bridge. The last seven miles from Frankfort to the Forks of the Elkhorn ran until April 7, 1985. Finally, in 1987, the approximately 10 miles of railroad tracks were taken up and all operations ceased in the area.

This geocache is one of 10 geocaches along the Historic Buffalo Geotrail. Passports are to be given out at the June 4, 2016 Historic Buffalo Geotrail event. Geocachers will visit all 10 geocaches along the trail and stamp the corresponding block on the passport and turn it in for a prize as supplies last. Passports will be available outside at the designated Historic Buffalo Geotrail passport box on the front porch of Stamping Ground City Hall, 3374 Main Street, Stamping Ground, Kentucky. Completed passports can be turned in here as well.

Please remember to leave the designated stamp and ink pad inside of the geocache containers!
