Le Grand Carré des Offices-Commun est un édifice construit entre 1682 et 1684, dont la vocation était d’abriter les commensaux de Louis XIV : cuisines, logements de fonction pour les officiers secondaires et chambres pour les serviteurs, valets et certains courtisans.
Le Grand Commun sera transformé en manufacture d’armes pendant la Révolution, en école et en orphelinat durant la Restauration, puis en hôpital militaire jusqu’en 1996.
La cour carrée du Grand Commun a fait l’objet de fouilles ayant permis de retrouver les vestiges du jeu de Paume de Louis XIII ainsi qu’un cimetière du Haut Moyen Âge.
