Mildred Mahoney's Haunted Doll House Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

wildniagara: This one hadn't been logged in awhile and we were there for a walk anyway and sure enough it was missing. Time for a new cache here. There's a cool new tree here after a recent storm snapped the top off it. Thanks for all the good logs.

Geocache Description:

Mildred Mahoney's Doll House AKA Bertie Hall is said to be Haunted.

Congrats to Rockharder for First to Find

The story goes that the building was used in the Underground Railroad. The legend claims there was once a tunnel leading from the river bank to the basement of the home where slaves escaping from the US were brought in by boat then shuttled to safety through the tunnel to stay in the home until they could move to a more permanent location. The legend goes on to say the owner of the building had a son who was playing in the basement during a storm. During these storms the river typically raises 6 feet or more and he apparently drowned in the basement or tunnel. Many have looked for traces of the tunnel on the shoreline with no luck and others claim to see the outline of the sealed off tunnel deep in the basement. The home later became known as the "Doll House" when it housed a doll museum. Such a beautiful building with a rich history its a shame to see it sit empty with the exception of the odd ghostly haunting event usually around Halloween.
