Geocache Description:

NOTE: (TOTT) May need tool to get paper out. (BYOP) Bring Your Own Pen.

The area around the Village was settled in 1848 by three boat loads of Dutch immigrants (about 900 total) brought over to the new world by Fr Theodore Van den Broek. The settlers were mainly from the Providence of Noord Brabant.

The Village was incorporated in 1899, with John Kilsdonk as first president.  The village remained predominatly Dutch in composition until the 1990's.  By the 2000 Census, German ancestry beat out the Dutch (42% to 31%).

In the 1950's the Dutch government sent language experts over to talk with the native speakers here.  The theory was that the small community would have preserved the words and pronunciation from many years ago, and they could determine how the Dutch language had changed over time.
