Little Angels - Pirron Railway
This is part of a series of geocaches that have been placed to remember the young lives that were lost to tragic circumstances and lost in history. Keeping their memories alive.
This is a very sad story about 2 sisters, a friend and a work colleague that had their lives taken in an extremely tragic circumstance.
Marie and Margaret Finlay aged 9 and 5 went to work with their dad on a hot Wednesday morning in early January 1953. Their father Michael worked for the Colac Council as a grader driver. Michael had a co-worker with him driving a water truck, putting water over the newly graded road. The co-worker, Edward Goonan went back to Pirron Yallock where he filled the truck with water. While waiting, young Clifford Ainley aged 7 asked Edward if he could go with him in the truck. Cliffords mother ran the Mamre Hotel in Pirron Yallock.
When Edward and Clifford got back to the site where the grader was working, the girls hopped into the truck to join their friend Clifford.
As Edward was watching where he was spraying the water onto the road, he crossed the railway crossing without looking...right into the path of the Melbourne bound train. Sadly everyone in the truck didn't survive.
